Chico City Council grants Velvet's cannabis dispensary appeal, denies three

The Chico California City Council met on Nov. 2 to discuss a controversial topic within the community: cannabis dispensaries. 

Four cannabis dispensary businesses: Ashe Chico LLC, Authentic Chico LLC, Grupo Flor and Velvet Chico were present that evening to appeal denials of their applications to open storefronts.

Only Velvet Chico’s application was approved, the three other dispensaries denied.

“Before we start, please refrain from any applause or booing,” Mayor Andrew Coolidge asked the gathered crowd. “If you have a sign, please stand at the back of the hall.”

City Attorney Vincent Ewing spoke to the City Council to provide context and important information found by staff before each appellant.

Ewing said each case presented that night was too close to “Sensitive Use” locations. These businesses are defined as such because they primarily cater to children as a “Youth Center.”

All four applicants had been denied because they were determined to be less than 600 feet from “sensitive use” locations.

RED BLUFF, California . — On Tuesday, the Red Bluff City Council will review the status of a drafted cannabis ordinance and a petition submitted by a group hoping to bring commercial cannabis businesses to Tehama County for the first time.

 Cody Strock, director of Revive Red Bluff, says they have gathered roughly 1,400 signatures supporting the initiative to bring legalized commercial cannabis back in June and submitted the signatures to the City of Red Bluff. The city has received the signatures from the group to verify.

 "They told me it was on track. I submitted around 1,600 signatures or so, and the vast majority of them, 98% are valid. Which puts me about 200% to goal for the threshold of what is required to make this happen," Strock said.

 In May, the city council selected an attorney to represent the city as a special cannabis counsel, assisting the city with revisions to the draft cannabis ordinance.

Strock says he is pushing the ordinance to move forward in having residents who want to establish a cannabis business in Tehama county have the ability to do so.

Sacramento California - "Cannabis is coming to the California State Fair. For the first time, the fair in 2022 will host a competition — open to all licensed cannabis cultivators in the state — to judge the finest flower in California.

 Entrants will be divided into three divisions: indoor, mixed light and outdoor. Judges will evaluate the cannabis flower, with seven individual cannabis plant compounds being tested and identified for awards. That includes two cannabinoids — CBD and THC— and five terpenes, which are naturally occurring aromatic compounds that give the plant its characteristic smell and which are a source of plant essential oils and resins.

The California State Fair will hand out 77 bronze, silver, gold and double gold medals to the winners, as well as seven Golden Bear trophies for the “Best of California” in each category.

Red Bluff City Council holds special meeting for cannabis ordinance

RED BLUFF, California. — The Red Bluff City Council held a special meeting on Tuesday to review their drafted cannabis ordinance within city limits.

It was requested by the city’s special cannabis council with council members on some of the policy issues raised within their revised draft. These included having a 500-foot bubble around certain businesses, limiting no more than five retailer storefronts, and cannabis dispensary location limitations.

Other topics circled around business permit applications, operation requirements like asking cannabis businesses to have fully functioning cameras and storefront security at every store.

Confusion for business owners hoping to join Chico’s commercial cannabis future

After being halted shortly after the 2020 election, six months later two council meetings restarted the application process for commercial cannabis business. However, the city is only allowing three dispensaries to open, and business owners are worried about opportunity and further costs if distribution and manufacturing continue to be blocked.

Jessica MacKenzie, a longtime commercial cannabis advocate, shook her head in disbelief Thursday, discussing the June 1 council meeting which finally reopened the commercial cannabis application process."
